In a profound gesture of gratitude and respect, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed has honored Indian flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar and his crew for their extraordinary bravery during a life-threatening mid-air incident.
The crew was bestowed with the prestigious First Class Order of Zayed II, recognizing their exceptional courage in saving the lives of 174 passengers during a violent encounter on board their aircraft.
A Mid-Air Battle for Survival
The harrowing event occurred on September 30, 2026, during flydubai flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. In a sudden and violent turn of events, the co-pilot launched a brutal attack on Captain Machchhar using a crash axe within the cockpit.
Despite sustaining injuries from the assault, the Indian captain demonstrated remarkable presence of mind and physical resilience. He managed to fight through the chaos to open the cockpit door, a critical move that allowed the cabin crew and passengers to intervene.
The collective intervention of the crew and passengers successfully neutralized the attacker, preventing further tragedy and allowing the aircraft to maintain control. The flight was eventually able to make a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
A Message of Belonging and Support
Following the incident, the President personally visited the injured Captain on October 3 to check on his recovery. The formal recognition culminated in an award ceremony on October 27, where President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed met with the entire crew to express the nation's gratitude.
During the emotional meeting, the President offered words of deep solidarity to the crew members, making them feel part of the national fabric. He told the crew:
"UAE is your country. And there's a home for you here, and you have a family."
Legal Action Underway
While the crew has been celebrated for their heroism, the individual responsible for the attack is currently facing legal proceedings. Authorities are treating the incident as a terrorism attempt, ensuring that justice is served for the attempted hijacking and assault.
