Tricked Into Trafficking? Dubai-Based Trucker Faces Death Penalty in Saudi Arabia
Baljinder Singh, a commercial driver who spent a decade navigating the transit routes between Dubai and Saudi Arabia, is now facing the ultimate penalty. The Amritdhari Sikh from Sujanpur, Pathankot, has been sentenced to death by a Saudi Arabian court following his arrest for drug trafficking.
A Calculated Deception
The circumstances surrounding the arrest suggest a man who was manipulated into a crime he did not intend to commit. According to his family, Singh was pressured by a co-worker to transport a specific package. While he reportedly refused the request twice, he was eventually persuaded to comply after being shown a video of a sick, elderly person. He was led to believe that the parcel contained nothing more than essential medicine.
The deception was uncovered at the Dubai-Saudi border. When authorities conducted a scan of the package, they did not find medical supplies, but rather narcotics.
Three Years in Custody
Singh has been held in custody for three years since the incident. His parents, Gurmeet Kaur and Jaswinder Singh, are now making an urgent appeal to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Punjab state government. They are pleading for diplomatic intervention, legal assistance, and efforts to commute the sentence or secure his repatriation, emphasizing that Singh has no prior criminal history.
The situation has left his family in Punjab in a state of extreme financial and emotional distress. As the sole provider for his household, his absence has left his children without support, including:
