Tragedy in the Gulf: 28 Indians Dead in Conflicts and Industrial Blast
A sobering report presented to the Rajya Sabha has revealed a heavy toll on Indian nationals living and working across the Middle East. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that 16 Indians have lost their lives due to regional conflicts, while a separate industrial catastrophe in Qatar has claimed the lives of 12 more citizens.
The Toll of Regional Instability
During a session on September 23, 2026, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh disclosed that 16 Indian nationals have died within Middle East war zones. This group includes 10 seafarers. The official breakdown of these fatalities is as follows:
- Oman: 8 deaths
- UAE: 4 deaths
- Kuwait: 2 deaths
- Saudi Arabia: 1 death
The violence has also resulted in 75 Indian nationals being injured. The distribution of these injuries includes 32 individuals in the UAE, 24 in Oman, 13 in Kuwait, four in Qatar, one in Saudi Arabia, and one in Israel.
Qatar Pipeline Explosion
In a separate incident, 12 Indian nationals died following a pipeline explosion at the Ras Laffan gas complex in Qatar. Unlike the deaths occurring in war zones, authorities have categorized this specific event as an industrial accident rather than a conflict-related attack.
Compensation and Financial Relief
The Indian government has outlined specific financial assistance for the families of those affected:
- For the Ras Laffan victims: Families are entitled to Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
- For the war-zone casualties: An ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh has been authorized under the DG Shipping welfare scheme, with additional union top-ups of Rs 10–12 lakh.
