Tragedy at Sea: Indian Seafarer Killed in Attack on MV Cape Dao
A devastating maritime attack off the coast of Oman has resulted in the death of a young Indian sailor. The MV Cape Dao, an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier, was struck by two projectiles while en route to India, turning a routine voyage into a scene of chaos and loss.
The Attack and Immediate Aftermath
The vessel was reportedly targeted by two projectiles or torpedoes that struck the port side of the ship. The impact was concentrated on two critical areas: the engine room and the accommodation deck. The sudden strike left the crew in immediate peril.
Of the 20 Indian crew members on board, 19 were successfully rescued by the Royal Navy of Oman. However, the mission could not save everyone. Suraj Yadav, a 26-year-old wiper hailing from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, succumbed to severe head injuries sustained during the strike.
Government and Diplomatic Response
The Indian Embassy in Muscat has confirmed the fatality and is working closely with Omani authorities to manage the situation. In response to the tragedy, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family.
The Minister has issued urgent directives to ensure:
- The safe repatriation of all surviving crew members.
- The dignified return of Suraj Yadav's mortal remains to his home.
The Indian government has officially condemned the attack, calling for an immediate cessation of all targeting of commercial shipping vessels and civilian seafarers in the region.
Calls for Justice and Enhanced Security
The incident has reignited concerns regarding the safety of merchant mariners navigating the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. The Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI) has voiced sharp criticism over the persistent dangers faced by sailors in these waters.
The union has demanded increased naval protection, full accountability for the perpetrators of this attack, and swift justice for the victims.
As investigations into the perpetrators continue, the Indian Embassy remains in constant contact with the family of the deceased to provide support during this difficult time.
