Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has arrived in Washington to initiate urgent Saudi US defense talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The diplomatic mission aims to solidify American support as regional instability intensifies following recent military escalations in Yemen and provocative maritime claims from Iran.
Escalating Violence in Yemen
The high-level discussions follow a deadly incident in Yemen on Sunday. A strike at the Mawiya junction in Taiz has sparked intense controversy between warring factions. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that Saudi F-15 jets, operating from Khamis Mushait, were responsible for the attack, which he reported killed seven people and injured approximately 40 others, including children.
Additional reports cited by AFP suggested the situation was even more severe, estimating total casualties at nearly 50 and claiming the loss of 30 fighters. However, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has disputed these accounts, stating that their aircraft were targeting a Houthi camp and associated vehicles at the location. The Houthis have alleged that Saudi forces have carried out over 1,000 strikes during this recent period of escalation, including 26 sorties across five provinces in just a 24-hour window.
