Saudi Intercepts Houthi Missile and Drone Attack
Saudi Arabian air defences successfully neutralized a Saudi Houthi missile attack and drone barrage launched by the Iran-aligned militia on the morning of Saturday, 26 September 2026. The aerial assault targeted critical locations, including the capital region of Riyadh and the key southern garrison city of Khamis Mushait.
Successful Interceptions and Emergency Response
Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki confirmed that the military's defensive systems were able to destroy two drones aimed at the Riyadh region and two ballistic missiles directed at Khamis Mushait. While the interception was successful, the threat triggered immediate emergency protocols across the southern provinces.

Despite the intensity of the barrage, authorities reported that there were no casualties or physical damage resulting from the incident.
Geopolitical Tensions and Regional Security
The attack comes at a period of heightened military cooperation in the region. It occurred shortly after military leaders from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey convened in Riyadh to discuss regional security matters under the framework of the recently established Mecca Joint Defence Agreement.
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from international leadership. GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi described the strikes as a blatant violation of Saudi sovereignty and a direct threat to the stability of the entire region.
Adding to the tension, Hezam Alasad, a member of the Houthi political bureau, characterized the operation as a "small-scale rehearsal" for a potentially larger escalation in the future.

The escalation follows a series of diplomatic setbacks, including the rejection of a ceasefire proposal by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The region also continues to face pressure on vital maritime routes, specifically within the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
