Saudi Air Defenses Intercept Houthi Missile and Drone Attacks

Saudi Arabia’s air defense systems successfully intercepted multiple Houthi ballistic missiles and drones targeting several key regions, including Riyadh, Khamis Mushait, and the Eastern Province, in the early hours of Sunday, October 18, 2026.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki confirmed that mobile alerts were issued at 1:30 a.m. local time to warn the public of the hostile aerial threats. This latest wave of attacks follows a significant operation on Saturday, during which four drones were intercepted and two ballistic missile launchers were destroyed in Saada, Yemen.

Major Airline Suspensions and Travel Disruptions

The escalating conflict has sent shockwaves through the aviation sector, leading to widespread travel disruptions. Major airlines, including Emirates, Etihad, Air Arabia, and flydubai, have suspended flights to several key cities such as Riyadh, Dammam, and Jeddah.

International carriers including Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, Akasa Air, and SriLankan have also halted services to the affected areas. Current forecasts suggest that these extensive travel disruptions will remain in effect until at least October 24.

The safety of major transit hubs remains a primary concern. King Khalid International Airport has been targeted more than 20 times since October 1. A previous attack on the airport resulted in a tragic loss of life, claiming at least 13 victims, including several expatriates, and causing hundreds of injuries.

Tragedy in Najran and Maritime Security Concerns

Amidst the aerial combat, a Ministry of National Guard AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter crashed in the Najran region due to a technical malfunction. The accident resulted in the deaths of two crew members. While Houthi forces claimed responsibility for shooting down the aircraft, Major General Al-Maliki dismissed these assertions, citing technical failure as the cause.

The instability is also affecting maritime routes. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported several security incidents, including strikes on a tugboat near the UAE, attacks on tankers, and shots fired at an LNG carrier. These developments have heightened fears regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Global Travel Warnings and Diplomatic Responses

In response to the volatility, several nations have issued urgent travel advisories. The UK, US, and Australia have all released warnings, with the UK specifically advising against all non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia and any movement near the Yemen border.

Diplomatically, the region is rallying around Saudi Arabia. Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement, while Egyptian President Sisi has pledged support for Saudi defense efforts. Additionally, UAE Presidential Adviser Anwar Gargash has called for increased regional unity to navigate the crisis.

While US President Trump has expressed hope that the conflict will conclude quickly, defense officials like Pete Hegseth have warned of the serious consequences regarding regional nuclear ambitions. Meanwhile, Yemen’s recognized government has rejected mediation offers proposed by Iran via Qatar.
