Riyadh Airport Hit by Houthi Missiles as Iran Issues High-Stakes Ultimatum
The Saudi capital was plunged into chaos on Saturday as a Houthi missile attack directly targeted King Khalid International Airport, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. Explosions and plumes of thick black smoke rose over Riyadh, triggering emergency sirens and widespread panic across the city.
Chaos at King Khalid International Airport
The strike caused immediate disruption to regional travel, with FlightRadar24 reporting significant flight delays and cancellations. As the missiles descended, Saudi civil defence issued urgent emergency alerts for residents in both Riyadh and Al-Kharj, warning of hostile aerial threats.
Footage from Reuters and AFP captured a massive blaze erupting at the airport's fuel-storage depot. Observers noted flames engulfing tanks bearing the Aramco logo. While firefighters eventually managed to extinguish the fire, the scale of the blaze sent shockwaves through the region. Although Saudi authorities have since declared an all-clear, they have yet to release specific damage assessments or casualty counts.
Houthi Retaliation and Military Claims
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree officially claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that the group deployed a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones. According to Saree, the operation targeted sensitive sites in Riyadh as well as Aramco facilities located in the Red Sea hub of Yanbu.
The group framed the attack as a direct retaliation for Saudi-led airstrikes on Sanaa. In response, the Saudi-led coalition reported several defensive successes, including:
- The interception and destruction of a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh.
- Thwarting additional attacks targeting Bisha, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu.
While the coalition denies that the strike on the fuel depot was successful, visual evidence of smoke and fire remains a point of contention.
A Growing Regional Crisis
The intensity of the conflict is mounting as Houthi forces have recently secured portions of Yemen's Red Sea coast and islands overlooking the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait. This territorial gain has been accompanied by frequent drone and missile strikes on various Saudi cities, including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran.
The human and economic toll is becoming increasingly evident. UN agencies report that the surge in violence has already displaced over 100,000 Yemenis, while Gulf stock markets have responded to the instability with notable declines.
Iran’s Ultimatum and the Threat to Global Shipping
As the battlefield heats up, the diplomatic tension has reached a breaking point. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, revealed that Tehran has delivered a list of demands to Washington through Qatari mediators.
The Iranian demands include:
- An immediate end to warfare on all fronts.
- The unfreezing of Iranian funds.
- The lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports.
- A cessation of the Saudi-Yemen conflict.
"Iran is prepared for a 'decisive war'," warned Rezaei, noting that recent test-fires of anti-ship missiles near a U.S. carrier serve as a deterrent.
