Indian Expat Rajat Sabharwal Drives UAE Sustainability & Community Change
Dubai-based hospitality pro Rajat Sabharwal spearheads major recycling and food security projects to support UAE's net-zero goals.

Since relocating to the UAE in 2018, Rajat Sabharwal has proven that being an expatriate is about more than just professional success—it is about actively giving back to one's host nation. The Dubai-based hospitality professional and Director of Food and Beverage is gaining widespread recognition for his dedicated leadership in environmental sustainability and community welfare.
A Massive Impact on Waste Management
Throughout 2025 and 2026, Sabharwal has spearheaded several high-impact recycling drives designed to reduce the environmental footprint of the region. His initiatives have yielded impressive, measurable results:
- Can Collection: In February, he organized a drive that successfully recovered 60kg of cans.
- Paper Recycling: His "Recycle, Reforest, Repeat" program in July diverted a staggering 2,930kg of paper from landfills.
- One Root, One Communi-Tree: This dedicated project contributed to the collection of 300kg of glass and 2,500 sheets of paper.
Championing Food Security
Recognizing the critical importance of resource management, Sabharwal has also become a key player in the fight against food waste. By participating in the "Zero Food Waste to Landfills" campaign and the "One Million Meals from Surplus Food" initiative, he has worked closely with the UAE Food Bank. These efforts are vital in supporting the nation's broader food security objectives and reducing waste.
Supporting People of Determination and Mentorship
Sabharwal’s vision extends beyond the environment and into the heart of the community. He has been a consistent supporter of People of Determination, notably by organizing meaningful Iftar events at the Special Needs Future Development Centre.
Furthermore, he is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of talent. By mentoring young hospitality professionals, he encourages them to look beyond their professional mandates and contribute meaningfully to the local environment and society.
"Expatriates should contribute to their local environment beyond their professional mandates."
His ongoing work aligns seamlessly with the UAE’s national sustainability and net-zero ambitions, setting a powerful example for the Indian diaspora and the wider expatriate community living in the Emirates.
