Indian Expat Rajat Sabharwal Leads Dubai Sustainability Drive
Indian expat Rajat Sabharwal spearheads major recycling and food waste reduction projects in Dubai, supporting the UAE's net-zero 2050 vision.

Rajat Sabharwal, an Indian expatriate serving as the Director of Food and Beverage at a luxury hotel resort in Dubai, has emerged as a prominent figure in regional sustainability and community engagement. Throughout 2025, Sabharwal has spearheaded several environmental and humanitarian campaigns that highlight the power of individual action within the UAE.
Significant Environmental Impact
Sabharwal's commitment to the environment is evidenced by a series of successful recycling drives. In February, a can collection drive resulted in the recovery of 60kg of recyclable material. This was followed by the "Recycle, Reforest, Repeat" initiative in July, which successfully diverted 2,930kg of paper from waste streams.
He maintained this momentum into the end of the year with the "One Root, One Communi-Tree" project in December. This initiative successfully gathered 2,500 sheets of paper and 300kg of glass, further reducing the local environmental footprint.
Tackling Food Waste and Supporting Communities
Beyond recycling, Sabharwal has focused heavily on the critical issue of food waste. He has been an active supporter of the UAE Food Bank’s "One Million Meals from Surplus Food" initiative. Additionally, he participated in the "Zero Food Waste to Landfills" campaigns conducted during Ramadan, working in partnership with the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative (NEMA).
His humanitarian efforts also extend to social welfare and community building. In March 2025, he organized a special Iftar celebration at the Special Needs Future Development Centre, emphasizing the importance of social inclusion and community support.
Aligning with the UAE’s Net-Zero 2050 Vision
These individual efforts occur against the backdrop of the United Arab Emirates' national commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The country's comprehensive sustainability framework includes the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the UAE Green Agenda 2015-2030, and the UAE Energy Strategy 2050.
The UAE Energy Strategy 2050 was notably updated in 2024, setting a target for a 30% clean energy share by 2030. Sabharwal advocates for expatriates to integrate deeply with local culture and contribute to these national goals beyond their professional duties, emphasizing that incremental actions can generate significant social and environmental impact.
