Oman Removes VAT on 1,546 Essential Items

In a significant move to combat inflation and ease the financial burden on residents, the Oman Tax Authority has announced the removal of the 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) on a wide range of essential goods. Effective from October 1, 2026, the tax rate for 1,546 specific items will be reduced to 0%.

This strategic policy shift is designed to lower the daily cost of living and provide much-needed support to the healthcare sector. The decision is expected to offer substantial relief to the expatriate community in Oman, particularly regarding the costs of groceries and medical necessities.

The tax exemption covers three primary categories, totaling 1,546 products that will no longer be subject to the 5% VAT:

  • Food Items: 807 products including meat, poultry, fish, milk, fruits, vegetables, eggs, grains, lentils, cheese, rice, tea, spices, bread, and water.
  • Medical Supplies: 677 items including antibiotics, vaccines, hormones, infant formula, pediatric medicines, and various medical instruments.
  • Veterinary Products: 62 different products.

By setting the tax rate to 0% for these categories, the government aims to improve access to vital goods and ensure that basic nutrition and healthcare remain affordable for all segments of society.

Consumer Advice: Check Your Receipts

As these changes take effect, authorities have urged consumers to remain vigilant during their shopping trips. To ensure the benefits of this policy are being passed on to the public, shoppers are advised to verify their purchase receipts at the point of sale.

If a 5% VAT charge is still reflected on a receipt for any of the zero-rated items, consumers are encouraged to:

  1. Inquire directly with the store management or pharmacy staff.
  2. Request a correction to ensure the 0% rate is applied as per the new regulations.

This initiative reflects a broader effort by the Oman Tax Authority to curb price inflation and stabilize the cost of essential daily commodities for the nation's residents.
