Oman to Launch Duty-Free Markets at Three Major Borders

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has announced the establishment of new Oman duty-free border markets at three major land crossings. This strategic initiative, authorized by Decision No. 145 of 2026 issued by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsen Al Shuraiqi, the Inspector General of Police and Customs, is designed to stimulate commercial activity, enhance tourism, and improve regional logistics.
Strategic Locations for Cross-Border Trade
The new markets will be situated at key transit points to provide expanded shopping options for travelers and residents moving between Oman and its neighbors. The three designated border crossings are:
- Al Wajajah: A primary route connecting Oman to the UAE, frequently utilized by residents of Dubai and the northern Emirates.
- Khatmat Milaha: A vital crossing point for travelers heading toward the eastern coast.
- Rub' Al Khali (Empty Quarter): The major land connection between Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Enhanced Access for Expats and Travelers
Under the new regulatory framework, these markets will offer a variety of goods that are exempt from customs duties and taxes. A key objective of the project is to benefit expatriates and frequent cross-border commuters by providing them with direct access to duty-free products.
Unlike traditional duty-free shopping, which often requires visiting airport facilities, these land-based markets will allow travelers to enjoy tax-free shopping as part of their regular transit, boosting both the consumer experience and the Sultanate's commercial sector.
