Odia Worker Dies by Suicide in Abu Dhabi After Gambling Extortion
A 25-year-old Odia worker in Abu Dhabi died by suicide following extortion and death threats from an illegal online gambling scheme.

A 25-year-old migrant worker from Odisha's Ganjam district died by suicide in Abu Dhabi on October 27, 2026, following alleged extortion and death threats linked to an illegal online gambling operation.
Babula Nayak, a resident of Kanaka village, had been working as a fitter at a private firm called HECO since arriving in the United Arab Emirates in October 2024. The tragedy has sparked calls from his family for a thorough investigation into the predatory gambling scheme that led to his death.
The Online Gambling Trap
According to family reports and a formal complaint lodged at the Khallikote police station, Nayak was introduced to an online casino game by a fellow villager. While he initially experienced small wins, the situation quickly turned into a financial catastrophe.
Nayak reportedly suffered massive losses amounting to several lakhs of rupees. Following these losses, the operator of the illegal gambling scheme allegedly subjected him to persistent extortion. The family claims that the operator issued explicit death threats to Nayak, demanding the immediate repayment of the lost funds.
Overwhelmed by the intense financial pressure and the fear for his safety, Nayak consumed a poisonous substance.
Repatriation and Calls for Justice
Krishna Prasad Pradhan of the Pravasi Odia Shramik Sahayata Kendra has confirmed that coordination is currently underway with authorities in Odisha and Indian diplomatic missions in the UAE. These efforts are focused on facilitating the repatriation of Nayak's mortal remains to his home village for his final rites.
The deceased, the son of Anatha Nayak and Kamini Nayak, leaves behind a grieving family that is now demanding justice. They have called for a comprehensive investigation to identify and arrest the individual responsible for managing the online gambling operation.
