Following the impact, the crew was forced to abandon the ship. They were subsequently rescued by the Omani Coast Guard. However, the mission to save all crew members met with tragedy.

The Victim and Survivors

One crew member, identified as Gandhar Nahim Ajij from the Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat, succumbed to his injuries. He was being transported to a hospital at Khasab Port when he passed away, according to reports from the Directorate of Maritime Administration.

  • Fatalities: 1 (Gandhar Nahim Ajij)
  • Survivors: 13 crew members rescued by Omani authorities

Vessel Route and Cargo

The MSV Al Jusufi had departed from Hamriyah Port in the UAE on October 31, carrying a shipment of dates. The vessel was en route to Porbandar, Gujarat, when the attack took place.

Diplomatic and Official Response

Indian Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the attack by the unidentified aerial object and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a strong condemnation of the strike, describing it as "deeply concerning" and demanding an immediate end to the targeting of civilian maritime vessels.

The Indian Embassy in Muscat is currently working closely with Omani authorities to manage two critical tasks:

  1. Facilitating the repatriation of the 13 surviving crew members.
  2. Arranging the return of the remains of Ajij to India.

Growing Security Threats in West Asia

This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of maritime workers in the region. This latest tragedy brings the official Indian death toll in the ongoing West Asia conflict to 23, with 15 of those fatalities being seafarers.

Indian seafarers account for over 12 percent of the global maritime workforce and are increasingly exposed to drone and missile strikes in regional waters.

While salvage operations for the MSV Al Jusufi are currently underway, the source of the aerial attack remains unidentified. The incident follows other recent maritime security scares, including a strike on an LNG carrier in the Persian Gulf, underscoring the volatile security landscape facing commercial shipping routes in the Middle East.
