5 Indian Sailors Rescued After Tanker Missile Strike

Five Indian sailors have been successfully rescued following a missile strike on the Kuwaiti-flagged crude oil tanker MT Kazimah III in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident, which occurred on the night of October 2, 2026, has sparked fresh concerns regarding maritime security in the region.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed via its official social media account that the five Indian nationals were safely brought ashore. The embassy expressed its gratitude to the Omani authorities for their swift assistance in the rescue operation.
The Vessel and the Attack
The tanker, identified as the VLCC Kazimah III (IMO 9329693), is a massive 317,250 deadweight tonnage (dwt) vessel owned and operated by the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company. At the time of the strike, the vessel was reportedly en route to the Port of Lome, Togo.
The attack involved an unidentified projectile hitting the tanker, an event linked to maritime security warning 147-26 issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). While the sailors are safe, the strike highlights the ongoing volatility of the shipping lanes.
Escalating Maritime Security Warnings
The strike on the MT Kazimah III is part of a series of recent maritime incidents reported by UKMTO and Reuters. Other recent warnings include:
- Warning 148-26: Reported a fire and blackout on a tanker exiting the Strait of Hormuz, which was later extinguished with no casualties or pollution reported.
- Warning 149-26: Confirmed another crude tanker was struck by a projectile on its port side approximately four nautical miles east of Oman, though the crew was reported safe.
Indian Seafarers at Risk
The safety of Indian nationals working at sea is a critical concern for New Delhi. According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, there are currently over 4,500 Indian sailors deployed on commercial vessels in this region. This includes approximately 163 Indians working aboard 12 active cargo ships.
The frequency of these attacks has drawn condemnation from high-ranking officials. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar previously addressed the United Nations General Assembly, describing the ongoing attacks on commercial vessels and mariners from the Gulf to the Red Sea as "unacceptable."
While the embassy has confirmed the safety of the five rescued sailors, their names, specific ranks, and home states have not yet been disclosed.
