Five Indian Sailors Rescued After Tanker Hit in Strait of Hormuz

Five Indian sailors rescued from a Kuwaiti-flagged crude oil tanker have been safely brought ashore in Oman following a projectile strike in the volatile Strait of Hormuz.
The incident occurred on Friday, October 2, 2026, involving the MT Kazimah III, a very large crude carrier owned by the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company. The vessel was reportedly en route to the port of Lome in Togo when it was struck by an unidentified projectile while traversing the critical waterway.
Emergency Response and Crew Safety
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the impact caused a temporary blackout and a small fire on board. Fortunately, the crew acted swiftly to bring the fire under control. The Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed that the rescue was successfully coordinated, and all five Indian crew members remained unharmed during the evacuation.
Despite the strike, no casualties or environmental damage have been reported, providing a sense of relief amidst a period of intense regional tension.
A Pattern of Rising Maritime Threats
This attack is not an isolated event; it marks the fifth tanker hit in the region recently. This follows a similar strike on the KOTC vessel Al Funtas less than a week prior. The escalating instability in the waterway is largely attributed to the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran, which broke out in February 2026.
The security situation has become so precarious that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated on Friday that safe passage through the region cannot be guaranteed under the current arrangements. This heightens the risk for the thousands of merchant mariners navigating these waters.
Risk to Indian Seafarers
The Ministry of External Affairs has highlighted the significant number of Indian nationals at risk in these waters. Currently, over 4,500 Indian seafarers are working on merchant ships in the Persian Gulf, with 163 Indians serving on 12 active cargo vessels in the immediate vicinity.
Wider Regional Security Volatility
The maritime strike is part of a broader wave of instability affecting the Middle East, including:
- Saudi Arabian Attacks: Houthi projectiles have recently struck a school in Najran and caused damage in the Asir region. Additionally, a Houthi drone struck an electricity station in Medina on September 29.
- Aviation Security Incident: In a separate but related surge of tension, a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv experienced a mid-air emergency on Wednesday. An Omani first officer allegedly stabbed the Indian captain, Smit Machchhar. The suspect was subdued by passengers and crew before the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. Captain Machchhar is currently recovering in a UAE hospital.
