UAE Honors Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar for Mid-Air Heroism

In a prestigious ceremony held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates has bestowed the First Class Order of Zayed II upon Indian flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar. The high honour was presented in recognition of his extraordinary courage and life-saving actions during a violent mid-air cockpit attack.

A Terrifying Battle at 34,000 Feet

The harrowing incident took place on September 30, 2026, aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. While the aircraft was cruising at a high altitude of 34,000 feet, the crew was suddenly faced with a life-threatening security breach.

The aircraft's Omani co-pilot, identified as Hammam al-Hammami, launched a brutal assault on Captain Machchhar using an emergency crash axe. The attack was severe, leaving the captain with a compound depressed skull fracture and several other significant injuries. Despite the intense physical trauma and the chaos in the cockpit, Machchhar’s quick thinking became the deciding factor in the safety of the flight.

Regaining Control of the Aircraft

In a desperate struggle to save the plane, Captain Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door. This critical move allowed off-duty pilots, crew members, and passengers to intervene and successfully subdue the assailant.

The intervention was vital, as the aircraft had already entered a dangerous, steep descent following the attack. Through the collective efforts of the crew and passengers, control of the aircraft was regained, allowing for an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Following the landing, Machchhar received initial medical attention in Saudi Arabia before being airlifted to Abu Dhabi for specialized recovery.

Global Recognition for Extraordinary Bravery

The pilot's heroism has garnered significant international attention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly commended Machchhar for his bravery, and authorities in Israel have stated their intention to present him with a civilian bravery award.

The award ceremony, held on October 27, 2026, was attended by the highest levels of UAE leadership, including:

  • UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan
  • Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
  • Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Sheikh Hamdan personally presented the medals to Captain Machchhar and his crew during the presidential reception.

A Historic Milestone

The First Class Order of Zayed II is a rare distinction. While other Indian nationals have received this honour in the past—such as former ambassador Navdeep Singh Suri in 2019 and Sunjay Sudhir in 2025—Captain Machchhar holds a unique place in history. He is the first recipient to be honoured specifically for an act of personal bravery.
