Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Hailed Hero After Mid-Flight Stabbing

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national flying for flydubai, is being celebrated as a hero after surviving a violent mid-flight stabbing during a journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
A Terrifying Mid-Air Emergency
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, involving flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8. The aircraft departed Dubai International at 7:05 a.m. UAE time, but the flight turned into a nightmare at approximately 9:21 a.m. when the plane experienced sudden altitude fluctuations.
Reports indicate the jet plummeted more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. During the crisis, the crew transmitted an emergency squawk 7700, followed by a code 7500 signal, which signifies unlawful interference. The aircraft eventually managed to land safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with all 174 passengers and crew members escaping without injury.
The Attack in the Cockpit
According to accounts provided by Israeli officials, the co-pilot—identified as an Omani national—allegedly attacked the captain. Despite suffering a stabbing, Captain Machchhar demonstrated extraordinary bravery by managing to open the cockpit door. This crucial action allowed passengers and crew members to intervene and overpower the attacker.
With the captain wounded, the aircraft was brought to a safe landing by two other flydubai pilots who were on board the flight as passengers.
Recovery and Official Reactions
Passenger Shota Musaev noted that the captain had suffered significant blood loss during the struggle. Following the emergency landing, Machchhar was taken to a hospital in Tabuk, where he is reported to be in stable condition. The Mumbai-born pilot, who is of Gujarati origin, has a distinguished career with nearly 15 years of experience and approximately 9,750 flight hours.
The captain's courage has drawn international recognition:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the pilot's bravery on the social media platform X.
- US President Donald Trump reportedly commended the outcome of the incident.
Ongoing Security Investigation
While flydubai has confirmed that an "altercation" took place on the flight deck, the full details of the security breach are still being determined. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has classified the event as a security incident and is currently conducting an investigation. Additionally, the UAE Attorney General has established a dedicated investigative team to look into the matter.
Although Saudi authorities have reportedly detained the co-pilot, these details have not yet been officially confirmed by aviation regulators or flydubai.
