Indian Pilot Saves 174 Lives After Co-pilot's Axe Attack

In a harrowing mid-air struggle that threatened the lives of 174 passengers, Indian aviator Captain Smit Machchhar emerged as a hero after surviving a violent axe attack by his co-pilot.
A Mid-Air Struggle for Survival
On 30 September, Flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, became the site of a terrifying confrontation. Captain Machchhar, an Indian national with over 13 years of experience and 9,750 flight hours, was attacked by his co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, using a crash axe.
Despite sustaining injuries during the assault, Machchhar demonstrated incredible presence of mind. He managed to open the cockpit door from the floor, a critical move that allowed the crew and passengers to intervene and help secure the aircraft.
Terrorist Intent and Sudden Descent
The aircraft's emergency systems triggered code 7500, signaling unlawful interference. During the chaos, the plane plummeted more than 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. The flight was forced to make an emergency diversion to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where both crew members were initially hospitalized.
UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has officially classified the event as a terrorist act. Investigations suggest that al-Hammami, an Omani national, allegedly planned the attack with the intent to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion airport.
Background of the Attacker
Reports indicate that al-Hammami had previously been dismissed from Oman Air due to concerns regarding radical views. Authorities are currently investigating his history, including his time spent in New Zealand and his studies at RMIT University in Melbourne. It is alleged that he had operated a previous Tel Aviv flight while contemplating a similar attack.
Heroism Recognized Globally
Captain Machchhar is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Abu Dhabi. His bravery has garnered international recognition, including a personal phone call from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the call, the pilot reportedly expressed his unwavering resolve to protect his passengers.
The Indian Ambassador, Deepak Mittal, also visited the pilot to offer support. In honor of his courage, the state of Gujarat has announced that it will present him with the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award.
