Indian Pilot Recovering After Mid-Air Flydubai Axe Attack

Captain Smit Machchhar, a veteran Indian pilot, is currently undergoing intensive medical treatment in an Abu Dhabi hospital after surviving a violent mid-air attack in the cockpit of a flydubai aircraft.
The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, during flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Machchhar was reportedly attacked by his co-pilot, identified as Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national, who struck him with an axe. The assault caused the aircraft to descend rapidly by nearly 14,000 feet.
Heroic Actions Save 174 Passengers
Despite the severity of the attack, Captain Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, a critical move that prevented a total loss of control. This allowed two other flydubai pilots, who happened to be traveling on the same flight as passengers, to enter the cockpit and subdue the attacker.
The crew successfully landed the aircraft in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, ensuring the safety of the 174 people on board. While reports have surfaced suggesting the aircraft's engines failed and required restarting during the steep descent, official flight data is currently undergoing review to confirm these details.
Medical Condition and Recovery Efforts
The captain sustained serious injuries, including a fractured skull and various neurological traumas. Following emergency surgery in Tabuk, he was airlifted to Abu Dhabi via a private aircraft provided by the ruler of Dubai. He remains under neurological observation, with medical staff monitoring several symptoms, including:
- Blurred vision
- Memory gaps
- Intense headaches
His wife, Sonal Machchhar, is reportedly shielding him from the traumatic details of the event as investigations proceed. Despite his current condition, the veteran Boeing 737 pilot, who boasts approximately 9,750 flight hours, has expressed a profound desire to return to flying once he has recovered.
Global Leaders Praise Pilot's Bravery
The courage displayed by Machchhar has drawn praise from world leaders and high-ranking officials. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Deputy Prime Minister, visited the captain in the hospital, stating that his actions embodied the highest levels of responsibility.
Other notable reactions include:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both publicly lauded the pilot's bravery in preventing a major disaster.
- Deepak Mittal, the Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, visited the captain and his family to offer support.
As the investigation continues, US Vice President JD Vance has confirmed that Washington is looking into a potential link between the attack and Iran. At this time, there is no immediate timeline for Machchhar's discharge or his eventual return to duty as doctors continue to evaluate his long-term neurological health.
