Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Hailed as Hero After Mid-Air Attack

Captain Smit Machchhar, a 39-year-old pilot from Ghatkopar, Mumbai, is being hailed as a hero after surviving a violent mid-air assault by his co-pilot. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying approximately 174 passengers and crew.
The aircraft was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the situation turned critical. The flight issued a 7700 general emergency code, which was quickly followed by a 7500 code, signaling unlawful interference. In a terrifying sequence of events, the aircraft plummeted over 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds.
A Terrorist Act in the Cockpit
Following a thorough investigation, UAE Attorney-General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi confirmed on Saturday, 3 October 2026, that the co-pilot attempted to carry out a terrorist act. The attacker reportedly targeted Captain Machchhar with a crash axe.
Despite sustaining severe injuries and bleeding heavily on the cockpit floor, Captain Machchhar demonstrated extraordinary presence of mind. He managed to reach and open the flight deck door, which allowed passengers and off-duty pilots to enter the cockpit and intervene, neutralizing the threat.
Emergency Landing and Medical Recovery
The aircraft successfully made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where all passengers and crew members were accounted for. Following the landing, Captain Machchhar underwent emergency surgery in Tabuk before being transferred to the UAE under a security escort for further treatment.
As of now, the Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs have confirmed that the Captain is in good condition and is recovering well under medical care.
Global Leaders Praise the Pilot's Bravery
The Captain's heroic actions have drawn recognition from world leaders and high-ranking officials:
- Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Dubai Crown Prince, visited the Captain in the hospital on 3 October, praising his courage and declaring him part of the "UAE team."
- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu have recognized his heroism.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also offered recognition for the pilot's actions.
- Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award in honour of the Captain.
- Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Dr. Deepak Mittal, and Consul General Dr. E. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy also visited the pilot to offer support.
Ongoing Investigations into the Attacker
While flydubai has officially described the incident as an "altercation," investigations are ongoing to determine the co-pilot's motives and employment history. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the co-pilot may have previously been barred from flying in Oman.
Captain Machchhar, a former SpiceJet pilot with over 9,500 flight hours, remains under observation as authorities work to uncover the full details of the attempted attack.
