Indian Captain Saves flydubai Flight After Mid-Air Attack

A Mumbai-born captain has been hailed as a hero after surviving a violent cockpit attack that sent a flydubai flight into a terrifying mid-air dive. Captain Smit Machchhar managed to prevent a major catastrophe on flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv with approximately 170 to 182 passengers on September 30, 2026.
A Violent Attempted Takeover
The emergency unfolded over Saudi Arabian airspace when the aircraft's co-pilot, an Omani national identified as Hamam al-Hammami, launched a sudden assault inside the cockpit. Using a crash axe, the assailant attempted to seize control of the Boeing 737, causing the plane to plummet 16,000 feet in roughly 30 seconds.
UAE Attorney General Counsellor Hamad Saif al-Shamsi stated that the incident is currently being investigated as an attempted terrorist act. Despite sustaining severe injuries during the struggle, Captain Machchhar displayed extraordinary presence of mind by managing to unlock the flight deck door from the inside.
Passengers and Crew Neutralise Attacker
The situation was brought under control through the combined efforts of the passengers and two off-duty flydubai pilots who were on board. They successfully neutralised the attacker, allowing the crew to level the aircraft and divert it to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, for an emergency landing.
Following the landing, the co-pilot was detained by Saudi authorities and subsequently transferred to UAE custody on October 1, 2026. Meanwhile, Captain Machchhar, who previously flew for SpiceJet, is currently recovering from his injuries in Abu Dhabi. During his recovery, he communicated with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing the intense struggle to prevent the aircraft from crashing.
Global Investigation into Extremist Links
Investigations into the assailant's background have triggered international interest. Reports from the Wall Street Journal suggest that al-Hammami had previously been barred from flying in Oman due to extremist views. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed the co-pilot's radicalization and has extended an invitation to Captain Machchhar to attend a commemorative ceremony in May 2027.
Authorities in Australia are also playing a key role in the probe. The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team confirmed they are investigating the suspect's potential links to Australia. Key findings include:
- RMIT University: Verified that the suspect was enrolled in an engineering program between 2015 and 2017, though he did not graduate.
- Radicalisation: The Financial Times has alleged that the suspect visited radical mosques and accessed extremist websites during his time in Australia, though these claims remain part of the ongoing investigation.
