Houthi Missile Strike Near Yemenia Flight Sparks Regional Alarm

Aden International Airport narrowly escaped a major aviation disaster on Friday night when a Houthi missile strike landed dangerously close to a commercial aircraft. The incident, which occurred while a Yemenia Airways passenger plane was preparing for takeoff, has sent shockwaves through the region, raising urgent concerns regarding aviation safety and regional stability.

The target of the strike was Yemenia Airways flight IY612, which was scheduled to depart for Cairo. According to reports, a projectile landed within 500 metres of the aircraft, with one missile striking approximately 100 metres from the center of the runway. The proximity of the blast forced an immediate emergency evacuation of all passengers and crew members on board.

A Narrow Escape and Humanitarian Concerns

Yemeni Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani described the event as a

horrific humanitarian catastrophe
that was only avoided by "divine providence." He condemned the attack as a blatant violation of international norms and a direct threat to the safety of civilian aviation.

While the Houthis claimed the strike was intended to target a Saudi military command headquarters and a weapons depot at Badr Camp, the actual impact occurred within civilian areas. This marks the second strike on Aden Airport in less than a week, following an earlier attack on October 7.

Escalating Violence in Aden

The strike on the airport follows a particularly deadly attack on Thursday that targeted the presidential palace complex in Aden. That incident resulted in:

  • At least five deaths, including security guards and civilian staff.
  • 16 reported injuries.

The Aden Security Department and the Transport Ministry confirmed that while missiles hit the airport perimeter, no casualties were reported from the Friday night strike. However, the disruption to aviation was significant, affecting multiple operations, including a second plane arriving from Cairo.

Regional Fallout and Economic Impact

The instability in Yemen is part of a broader pattern of regional hostilities that are increasingly impacting the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and their residents.

Disruption to Saudi Aviation

Saudi Arabia has also faced significant security challenges. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has been subject to repeated strikes. A deadly attack on October 10 resulted in 13 deaths and over 300 injuries, heavily impacting expatriate communities from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Jordan, and Syria. Operations at the Riyadh airport have faced severe disruptions, with many flights cancelled.

Impact on Expatriates and Oil Markets

The ongoing conflict is creating a ripple effect across the Middle East, particularly for the large expatriate populations in the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman. Residents and workers are facing:

  • Frequent flight cancellations.
  • Increased living costs.
  • Persistent security concerns.

Furthermore, the tension in the region, particularly regarding attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, has pushed oil prices toward $110 per barrel. As Saudi-led coalition forces continue to intercept missiles directed at the Yanbu oil export hub and destroy drones over Riyadh, the regional security landscape remains highly volatile. Meanwhile, the Yemeni government has reported military advances in Marib as the conflict persists.
