Houthi Missile Strikes Hit Riyadh Airport, Spark Chaos

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was thrown into turmoil on Saturday, October 10, following a massive explosion that triggered widespread evacuations and significant flight disruptions. The incident marks a dangerous escalation in the conflict with Houthi rebels, who have officially declared Saudi airspace a military theater.

Massive Flight Disruptions and Casualties

The security crisis has severely impacted regional aviation. Major airlines, including Etihad, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, and Kuwait Airways, were forced to cancel or divert their services due to the instability. Medical sources have confirmed that five individuals are currently fighting for their lives in intensive care following the recent strikes.

This latest incident follows a series of lethal attacks earlier in the week. On Thursday, October 8, two separate strikes at the airport resulted in the deaths of three Saudi nationals. Among the deceased was Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami of the national carrier, Saudia. One of those strikes caused extensive damage to airport facilities, while another hit a stationary Saudia aircraft, causing it to erupt in flames.

Wider Impact Across Saudi Arabia

The violence has not been limited to Riyadh. Earlier in the week, strikes on airports in Riyadh and Abha claimed the lives of three more people, including a Sudanese national in Riyadh and a Moroccan and Algerian woman in Abha. The fallout from intercepted missiles also caused damage to civilian areas, including a medical complex and a local kindergarten.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the attacks, utilizing both ballistic and cruise missiles to target locations such as the Khamis Mushait air base and Najran airport. In response, the Saudi-led coalition has launched Operation Dawn of Yemen, a retaliatory campaign that has targeted 136 military sites, including missile infrastructure.

Regional Instability and Economic Consequences

The conflict is spreading beyond airport perimeters. Houthi-affiliated media reported that retaliatory coalition strikes hit Saada, and an attack on Sanaa airport resulted in two deaths. Meanwhile, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated, with reports suggesting Iran targeted an LPG carrier, the NV Sunshine, contributing to a 75% reduction in commercial shipping traffic in the area.

As regional powers like Turkey and Pakistan reportedly activate mutual defense pacts, the economic repercussions are being felt across the Gulf. Rising insurance premiums and increased freight costs are driving up the price of consumer goods, a trend that is expected to impact the large expatriate populations living in the GCC.
