Houthis Call Riyadh Missile Attack a 'Rehearsal'
Tensions in the region have reached a fever pitch following a Houthi missile attack on Riyadh and other Saudi locations. While Saudi-led coalition air defenses successfully intercepted the incoming threats, the political fallout suggests a much larger conflict may be on the horizon.
Intercepts and Emergency Warnings
During the early hours of Saturday, the Saudi-led coalition confirmed that its defense systems neutralized two Houthi drones directed at the capital, Riyadh, and two ballistic missiles aimed at Khamis Mushait. Despite the intensity of the strikes, officials reported that there were no casualties.
The interception was announced by Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki via the social media platform X. Prior to the successful defense, local Civil Defence authorities had issued urgent emergency warnings for residents in Abha, Khamis Mushait, and Jazan, advising them to stay indoors and keep away from windows to avoid potential damage.
'A Small-Scale Rehearsal'
The psychological impact of the attack was amplified by statements from the Houthi movement. Hezam Alasad, a member of the Houthi Political Bureau, characterized the operation not as a standalone strike, but as a
small-scale rehearsal for a full-scale escalation.
Regional Condemnation and Security Threats
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) responded swiftly to the escalation. GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi condemned the strikes as a "flagrant violation" of Saudi sovereignty. He noted that the attacks represent a direct threat to both regional stability and civilian populations, urging the international community to hold the group accountable.
The recent surge in violence follows a series of aggressive moves by the Iran-backed Houthi movement, including:
- A naval blockade on Saudi shipping declared since July.
- The seizure of strategic sections of Yemen's Red Sea coastline, including Mocha and islands near the Bab al-Mandab.
- Repeated strikes targeting airports, energy infrastructure, and various cities.
Tensions were further heightened earlier this month following reports of a drone attempt near the approaches to Mecca—an incident Riyadh described as a "red line," though the Houthis denied involvement.
