Gulf Tensions Surge Amid Riyadh Refinery Fire and Tanker Strikes

The Gulf region is facing heightened instability following reports of a major fire at an Aramco facility south of Riyadh and a series of maritime strikes targeting tankers in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Aramco Facility Fire and Houthi Claims
Flames and thick smoke were observed rising from an Aramco facility near Riyadh on Saturday. The incident follows claims made by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who asserted that they successfully targeted the site using ballistic missiles and drones.
While the Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility, Saudi authorities have not officially confirmed that the facility was under attack. Furthermore, the Saudi-led coalition has dismissed the Houthi claims, describing them as misleading.
Maritime Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz
The maritime security situation has also deteriorated significantly. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a crude oil tanker was struck four nautical miles east of Oman on Saturday. This was followed by a second incident on Sunday, where another tanker sustained damage to its engine room within the Strait of Hormuz.
Reports indicate that a separate strike also occurred in the same waterway on Friday, marking a cluster of attacks in one of the world's most vital shipping lanes.
Iran Issues Ultimatum on Strait Closure
In response to the escalating maritime volatility, Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has issued a stern warning. He stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until Iran's seven specific conditions, outlined in the Islamabad Memorandum, are fulfilled. These conditions include:
- An end to U.S. aggression.
- The lifting of existing port blockades.
- The release of frozen Iranian assets.
Impact on Oil Markets and Military Operations
The geopolitical instability is directly impacting global energy markets. On Friday, Brent crude settled at $102.25 a barrel, while WTI reached $91.11.
In Yemen, the military conflict continues to intensify. Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili, a Yemeni military spokesman, reported that coalition forces conducted 97 operations against Houthi positions across the Tor al-Baha front and Taiz axis. The coalition claims these operations hit 260 Houthi fighters and destroyed 44 vehicles, though these figures remain unverified. This surge in activity follows recent reported Houthi strikes near Yanbu, Taif, and a power station in Medina.
Aviation Disruptions in the UAE
The regional unrest is also being felt in the aviation sector. Travelers in the UAE have faced disruptions, with numerous flight cancellations reported by flydubai and Air Arabia.
Adding to the atmosphere of tension, authorities highlighted a serious security incident involving flydubai flight FZ1073 on September 30
