GEMS Launches AI Teacher Twins for 24/7 Student Support
GEMS Education is transforming the learning experience in the UAE by introducing GEMS AI teacher twins, which offer students around-the-clock academic support. These digital personas are designed to act as extensions of the classroom, providing assistance with homework and complex subjects even after the school day has ended.
Developed in collaboration with the AI firm Napster, these digital twins are sophisticated models that replicate the appearance, voice, and specific instructional methods of real educators. By utilizing approved curriculum content, the AI ensures that the support provided remains academically rigorous and aligned with school standards. Students can engage with these twins through various channels, including video, voice, and text-based interactions.
Expanding the Reach of Educators
The initiative is not intended to replace human staff but rather to amplify their impact. Baz Nijjar, GEMS Senior Vice President of Innovation, AI and Futurism, noted that the technology aims to extend the reach of teachers, allowing them to support students more effectively outside of traditional hours.
The program is currently in its pilot phase at the GEMS School of Research & Innovation (SRI) located in Dubai Sports City. Following a successful proof-of-concept period, the school group intends to roll out the technology across its wider network in the Middle East by the end of 2026. Beyond simple homework help, the AI will assist with:
- Gamified learning experiences
- Custom content creation
- Interactive classroom simulations
Teacher Control and Data Privacy
To address concerns regarding job security, GEMS has clarified that teachers will maintain full authority over essential academic processes. This includes curriculum design, student grading, and all final decision-making. Furthermore, participation in the program is entirely voluntary for educators and requires both individual and institutional consent.
Data security is also a primary focus of the rollout. According to reports from Wired and Napster, all student data will remain within the country and will not be used to train Napster's external AI models. The system also incorporates specific safety guardrails and measures for human intervention to ensure a secure learning environment.
Information for Parents
Regarding the financial aspect, GEMS has indicated that there are currently no additional fees for this service, as it is integrated into the existing learning framework. Parents are advised to monitor official written communications from their specific schools regarding policy updates and to verify whether their child's teacher has opted into the digital twin program.
