From India to UAE: KS Bharat Eyes National Team Debut
Former Indian Test wicketkeeper KS Bharat has officially declared his intention to represent the United Arab Emirates national cricket team. Now a resident of Dubai, the 32-year-old is looking to pivot his career toward the UAE's cricketing future, aiming to bring his high-level international experience to the regional side.
A Decorated Career with India
Bharat brings a significant pedigree to the UAE setup. During his time with the Indian national team, he featured in seven Test matches and was a member of the squad for the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. Throughout his Test career, he recorded 221 runs and 19 dismissals.
His final appearance for India took place in February 2024 during a Test match against England in Visakhapatnam. Following his announcement to retire from international cricket in June 2026, he is now focusing his efforts on the white-ball format.
Making Waves in the ILT20 Development Tournament
Bharat is currently proving his form in the DP World ILT20 Development Tournament, playing as part of the MI Emirates Development squad. His recent performances have been nothing short of explosive:
- Against Desert Vipers Development: He smashed 51 runs off just 28 balls, a knock that included five massive sixes.
- Against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders Development: He followed up with a strong 43-run performance.
These performances are crucial as Bharat sets his sights on the Season 5 Player Auction, scheduled for October 1, 2026, where he hopes to secure a contract in the main ILT20 league.
Navigating the Path to Eligibility
While his ambitions are high, the transition involves strict adherence to ICC Player Eligibility Regulations. Under these rules, a player must undergo a three-year "cooling-off" period before they can represent a second national federation.
Since Bharat's last international match for India concluded on February 5, 2024, he will potentially become eligible for UAE selection starting February 6, 2027, provided he meets all necessary residency and qualifying criteria.
A New Chapter in White-Ball Cricket
Bharat is following in the footsteps of other Indian-origin players, such as Harpreet Singh Bhatia and Akshdeep Nath, who have recently joined the UAE setup. For Bharat, the move is motivated by a desire to pursue more frequent opportunities in white-ball cricket—an area where his chances were limited during his time with the Indian senior team—and a commitment to contributing to the growth and success of UAE cricket.
