Flydubai Pilot Survives Cockpit Attack as Jet Plunges 14,000 Feet

A Flydubai Boeing 737 narrowly escaped a major catastrophe on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, after a violent struggle in the cockpit caused the aircraft to plummet 14,000 feet over Saudi Arabian airspace. The flight, FZ1073, was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the sudden descent occurred, lasting approximately 30 seconds while the plane was cruising at 34,000 feet.

The captain, identified as Smit Matchar, an Indian national and former SpiceJet pilot, is being hailed as a hero after surviving a brutal assault by the co-pilot. According to reports from Israeli officials, the attacker used a knife or an axe to strike the captain, leaving him bloodied. Despite the severity of the attack, Matchar managed to maintain enough composure to open the cockpit door, allowing for intervention.

As the aircraft lost altitude rapidly, a group of passengers and crew members sprang into action to prevent a disaster. Among those who helped was a dentist on board, who joined passengers and crew to help restrain the assailant. Yaniv Hayun, a passenger on the flight, stated that he assisted in pulling the attacker away and helping to stabilize the situation.

With the captain injured, reserve crew members took control of the flight, successfully navigating the aircraft to an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. All 174 people on board survived the ordeal. Captain Matchar is currently in stable condition at a hospital in Tabuk, where he is receiving medical attention supported by the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Indian mission in the UAE.

Global Leaders React to Near-Disaster

The incident has drawn intense international attention, with world leaders praising the bravery shown during the crisis. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the event as an incident that prevented "another 9/11."

Other high-profile reactions included:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India praised the captain's heroic actions.
  • U.S. President Donald Trump commended the crew and passengers for their response.
  • Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled the incident a failed attempt at "jihadi terror."

Major Investigation Launched

While the assailant has been identified by Israeli officials as an Omani citizen, this claim has not yet been officially confirmed by Oman, the UAE, or Flydubai. The individual is currently being held and investigated in Tabuk.

On October 1, 2026, UAE Attorney General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered a specialized investigation to determine if the attack was a pre-planned act of terrorism. Although the aircraft is registered in the UAE, the investigation is a coordinated effort involving authorities from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Israel.

In the wake of the incident, Flydubai has announced that it has suspended all flights to Israel pending the final outcome of the international investigation. Authorities continue to look into potential regional involvements, though official assessments regarding specific actors remain inconclusive.
