UAE Classifies Flydubai Mid-Air Attack as Terror Incident

The United Arab Emirates has officially classified a violent mid-air struggle on flydubai flight FZ1073 as a terrorist attack. The decision follows a harrowing incident where a crew member attempted to seize control of the aircraft, endangering the lives of over 170 passengers.
UAE Prosecutor General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi confirmed the classification after investigators determined that the co-pilot used an emergency crash axe to assault the captain. The flight, which was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, became the scene of a terrifying struggle while flying over Saudi Arabian airspace.
A Violent Descent Over Saudi Arabia
The incident escalated approximately two and a half hours into the journey. Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 revealed that the Boeing aircraft underwent a sudden and violent descent, dropping roughly 16,625 feet in just over 30 seconds. The maneuver was so extreme that reports from The Guardian suggest a portion of the aircraft's rudder was actually detached during the chaos.
The majority of the passengers on board were Israeli nationals. Amidst the terror, the aircraft was eventually brought to safety by two off-duty flydubai pilots who were traveling on the same flight. They managed to land the jet at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, at approximately 06:58 local time.
Heroism in the Cockpit
The captain of the flight, Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, sustained serious stab wounds during the fight to defend the cockpit. Despite his injuries, Captain Machchhar showed immense bravery by successfully opening the cockpit door from the inside, which allowed the crew and passengers to intervene and neutralize the threat.
Following the emergency landing, Captain Machchhar received medical treatment in Saudi Arabia before being airlifted to Abu Dhabi. He is currently reported to be in stable condition. In a show of support, Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan met with the captain, and the Embassy of India has expressed its gratitude to the UAE for the high level of medical care provided.
Suspect Background and International Investigation
While UAE authorities have not officially released the name of the co-pilot, various international sources, including Reuters and the Associated Press, have identified him as Hammam al-Hammami, an Omani national. Details regarding his history have surfaced, suggesting he had previously been barred from flight duties in Oman due to concerns regarding extremist views.
Investigations are now being conducted on a massive scale. Security
