Ameya Ajith, a 7-year-old Indian student based in Dubai, passed away on the night of September 14, 2026, following a battle with Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome (FIRES). Ameya, a Grade 1 student at The Indian High School's Al Garhoud junior campus, was in Kerala with her parents, Ajith KP and Meera Ajith, for summer vacation when she fell ill.
Hospital Treatment and Illness
According to her family, Ameya had been healthy and active before the sudden onset of seizures in late July. She was admitted to a hospital on August 1 and spent approximately 45 days in intensive care. Despite receiving medical treatment and ventilator support, her condition did not improve, and she died due to cardiac arrest. Her funeral took place in her home region in Kerala. FIRES is a rare and severe neurological syndrome characterized by the onset of difficult-to-control seizures following a febrile illness. The U.S. National Institutes of Health classifies it as a subtype of New-Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE), with an estimated incidence of approximately one in a million.
Family and Community Tributes
Ameya was an only child. Her mother, Meera Ajith, had taken a career break from digital marketing about a year ago to support Ameya's education and extracurricular interests, while her father, Ajith KP, works in the sales profession in Dubai. Educators and the community at The Indian High School remembered Ameya as a bright, enthusiastic, and social student. Punit MK Vasu, the school's CEO, expressed deep condolences, noting that the school community had been awaiting her return after the holidays. Beyond academics, Ameya was a dedicated dancer at the Shamna Kasim Dance Studio. She had trained in Bharatanatyam, performed in school annual day events, and completed the traditional 'chilanka pooja'. Malayalam actress and dancer Shamna Kasim paid tribute to Ameya, who had expressed a dream of becoming an actress.
