The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially transitioned the red Nol ticket to a fully digital format, offering a more convenient way for occasional travelers to navigate the city. Commuters can now purchase and use digital Nol QR codes directly through their smartphones, eliminating the need for physical paper tickets or cards.

How to Access Digital Nol QR Tickets

To utilize this new service, passengers must use either the 'nol Pay' or 'S’hail' mobile applications. The digital tickets are valid for use across several key transport modes, including:

  • Dubai Metro
  • Dubai Tram
  • Public buses

Users can purchase their tickets up to 90 days in advance. However, travelers should note that the ticket only activates upon its first use and will expire at midnight on the same day.

Step-by-Step Purchase Guide

Getting your digital ticket is a straightforward process through the designated apps:

  1. Download the nol Pay or S’hail app.
  2. Sign in using UAE Pass or continue as a guest.
  3. Select your required travel zones or specific stations.
  4. Complete the payment to receive an instant QR code.

Crucial Usage Rules: No Screenshots Allowed

One of the most important updates for commuters is the security feature of the QR codes. Because the system uses refreshing technology, screenshots of the QR code will not be accepted. Passengers must have an active internet connection at the time of scanning to ensure the code is valid.

To pass through metro gates or board buses and trams, simply hold your smartphone screen up to the designated readers.

Pricing and Class Options

The RTA offers both Regular and Gold class options for single-trip and one-day passes. As of mid-October 2026, the pricing for Regular class (which includes a Dh2 service fee) is as follows:

  • One zone: Dh6
  • Two zones: Dh8
  • All zones: Dh10.50
  • One-day pass: Dh22 (offers unlimited travel until midnight)

Gold class tickets are available at higher price points for those seeking premium service.

Important Limitations

While the digital QR option provides great flexibility for occasional users, it is not applicable for all transport modes. The digital red Nol ticket cannot be used for:

  • Etihad Rail
  • Ferries
  • Water taxis

For frequent commuters, the RTA notes that maintaining a physical Silver or Gold Nol card remains the most economical choice for regular travel.
