Dubai Crown Prince Honors Indian Pilot Who Saved 170 Lives

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Deputy Prime Minister, visited Captain Smit Machchhar in an Abu Dhabi hospital to commend his extraordinary bravery. The Indian pilot is being hailed as a hero after preventing a mid-air catastrophe during a flydubai flight, saving the lives of everyone on board.

A Terrifying Mid-Air Attack

The harrowing incident occurred on September 30, 2026, during flydubai flight FZ1073. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was en route from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport in Israel when a violent emergency unfolded in the cockpit.

During the flight, the co-pilot allegedly attempted to seize control of the aircraft by attacking Captain Machchhar with a crash axe. Despite sustaining severe injuries during the struggle, the Captain’s decisive actions prevented the assailant from taking full control of the plane. He managed to open the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew, a reserve pilot, and passengers to intervene, subdue the attacker, and stabilize the aircraft.

Emergency Landing and Terror Investigation

Following the struggle, the flight was diverted to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, northern Saudi Arabia. All 170 passengers and crew members landed safely. To assist the affected travellers, flydubai dispatched two replacement aircraft to Tabuk.

The investigation into the incident has taken a serious turn. UAE Attorney General Counselor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi confirmed that the co-pilot's actions have been classified as a terror-related incident. Authorities are currently examining both physical and digital evidence to uncover the full circumstances and the motive behind the attack.

While some media reports have identified the co-pilot as an Omani national named Hammam Al-Hamami, official authorities have not yet confirmed this identity.

Global Recognition for a "Braveheart"

Sheikh Hamdan praised Captain Machchhar for his immense courage and sense of responsibility, noting that the pilot represents the values of compassion and peace upheld by the UAE. Photos released by the Dubai Media Office show the Captain in the hospital, receiving treatment for injuries to his head and arm.

The Captain's heroic actions have resonated far beyond the UAE. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian Embassy, and the Indian Ambassador to the UAE have all lauded him, describing the pilot as a "braveheart" who acted selflessly in a moment of extreme crisis.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed that Captain Machchhar, who was airlifted to Abu Dhabi on October 1 after receiving initial treatment in Tabuk, remains in stable condition.
