Bhavans Middle East Founder N.K. Ramachandran Menon Dies at 78

N.K. Ramachandran Menon, the Bhavans Middle East founder and chairman of the prominent school network, has passed away in Kerala at the age of 78. He died on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, leaving behind a massive educational legacy that spans the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

His last rites were performed on Thursday, October 1, at his family residence in Aluva. In honor of his life and contributions, various schools under the Bhavans group across the region held condolence assemblies and observed early closures on Thursday.

Menon's journey in the Gulf began in 1969 when he moved to Kuwait to work as a banker. His passion for education eventually led him to integrate the prestigious Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan network—founded in 1938 by K. M. Munshi—into the Middle East landscape.

The group's first major milestone was the opening of the Indian Educational School (IES) in Kuwait in 2006. Under his dedicated leadership, the institution grew from a single campus into a sprawling educational empire. His influence was so significant that in early 2022, he became the first Indian resident in Kuwait to be granted a UAE Golden Visa.

A Growing Network of Excellence

The Bhavans Middle East group expanded steadily over the decades, establishing a presence in key cities across the GCC. The network includes:

  • Private International English School (PIES) Abu Dhabi (opened September 2010)
  • Al Saad Indian School in Al Ain (opened September 2014)
  • Bahrain Indian School (opened September 2015)
  • The Smart Indian School in Kuwait (opened September 2016)
  • Bhavans Pearl Wisdom School in Al Ain (opened April 2019)
  • Pearl Wisdom School in Dubai (opened April 2020)
  • Bhavans Pearl Wisdom School in Sharjah (opened September 2023)
  • Pearl Heritage School in Abu Dhabi (opened August 2026)

In addition to these K-12 institutions, the group also operates early-years centers including the Jack and Jill Pre-School in Kuwait and the Piccadilly Nursery in Abu Dhabi.

Tributes and Family Legacy

The passing of the veteran educator has drawn widespread tributes from the Indian community and professional bodies, including the Indian Business and Professional Council. School leaders, including Dr. K. T. Nandakumar of PIES Abu Dhabi and Indu Panicker of Bhavans Pearl Wisdom School in Sharjah, expressed deep respect for his role as a mentor and pioneer.

Menon is survived by his wife, Sudha Ramachandran, and two children who are poised to continue his mission. His daughter, Divya Rajesh Ramachandran, currently serves as the Director of Bhavans Middle East, while his son, Sooraj Ramachandran, holds the position of Vice Chairman.
