Bahrain mandates local health insurance for dependent visas

Expatriates living in Bahrain must now navigate new health insurance requirements when applying for family visas and dependent residency permits. The Bahrain mandatory health insurance rule is designed to ensure that all dependents are covered by locally regulated providers.

New requirements for family visas

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) has introduced a mandate requiring local health insurance for all new family visa and dependent residence permit applications. While an official public announcement has yet to be released via a formal gazette notice, reports indicate the policy has been in effect since September 1, 2026.

Key details of the insurance mandate

Under the new guidelines, primary sponsors are responsible for ensuring that their dependents—including spouses and children—are covered by a valid policy. The following conditions apply:

  • Local Licensing: Coverage must be provided by an insurance company that is officially licensed within Bahrain.
  • No International-only Policies: International or travel insurance policies that are not underwritten by a local licensed insurer are currently not being accepted.
  • Duration of Coverage: The insurance policy must span at least two years, aligning with the full duration of the primary worker's residence permit.

Who is affected and what to expect

The mandate primarily impacts expatriate families residing in major areas such as Manama, Juffair, Adliya, Seef, and Riffa, particularly those sponsored by employees in the private sector.

While existing residency permits are not subject to immediate cancellation, the new rule is expected to impact future renewal applications. Furthermore, industry experts have noted that these new requirements may lead to extended processing times for residency files.

Advice for sponsors and applicants

Because the LMRA has not yet established official premium rates, applicants are encouraged to take proactive steps to avoid delays:

  1. Consult Brokers: Seek comparative quotes from brokers licensed by the Bahrain Insurance Association.
  2. Verify with LMRA: Obtain written confirmation from LMRA Expat Services counters regarding specific policy requirements, as procedures may vary at the counter level in the absence of an official notice.
  3. Coordinate with Employers: Sponsors should check with their company HR departments to determine if dependent insurance premiums will be covered under their existing employment contracts.
