Bahrain Mandates Health Insurance for New Family Visas

Expatriates planning to bring their relatives to the kingdom face a significant new requirement. As of September 1, 2026, the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) has implemented a mandate requiring Bahrain family visa insurance for all new applications for family visas and dependent residence permits.
While the LMRA has not yet released a formal public notice regarding this change, industry reports from Deloitte Middle East and EY Immigration Alert have confirmed that the policy is already active within the official processing systems. Currently, any applications submitted without a valid insurance certificate are being rejected or returned to the sponsor.
New Rules for Dependent Residency
The new regulation specifically targets new applications for dependents. While the rule is currently strictly applied to new filings, there are indications that it may be extended to include visa renewals in the future. The policy covers the following eligible dependents:
- Spouses of the primary worker.
- Children under the age of 24.
Strict Insurance Requirements
To ensure that applications are not rejected, applicants must adhere to several specific criteria regarding their medical coverage. It is no longer sufficient to simply provide salary certificates and attested marriage or birth certificates.
The following conditions must be met for the insurance to be considered valid:
- Licensed Providers: The insurance policy must be issued by a company that is officially licensed to operate within Bahrain.
- Coverage Duration: The policy must provide coverage for at least two years.
- Alignment: The insurance period must align with the duration of the primary worker's residency permit.
Financial and Processing Details
The existing financial requirements for sponsors remain unchanged. To qualify for dependent visas, the sponsor must maintain a minimum monthly net income of BHD 400, as registered with the Social Insurance Organization (SIO).
Regarding the costs and logistics of the application:
- Total Fees: The processing fee is BHD 95 per dependent, which consists of a BHD 90 service fee and a BHD 5 administrative fee.
- Submission Method: All applications must be submitted through the LMRA EMS portal.
- Processing Time: Once submitted, the typical timeframe for processing is between three to seven working days.
Expatriates are strongly advised to secure a private medical insurance policy from a Bahrain-licensed provider prior to submitting their applications. To avoid unnecessary delays, users should verify the updated document checklist on the official LMRA Dependants Residency Permit service page before beginning the process.
