Abu Dhabi Launches 'Jiran' to Help New Expats Settle

The Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development (DCD) has introduced a new volunteer initiative called 'Jiran' to assist expatriates in settling into their new homes and integrating into the local community. The programme, which translates to "neighbours," aims to provide a sense of belonging to those arriving in the emirate.
A Collaborative Community Effort
The 'Jiran' programme was officially launched on October 2, 2026, during the LIVEX 2026 fair. This initiative is being operated through a partnership between the DCD, the Emirates Foundation, the Abu Dhabi Real Estate Centre (ADREC), and the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM).
The programme is specifically designed to help newcomers—including expatriates from India and various other nations—overcome the common challenges of relocating to a new city. By offering guidance and community support, the initiative seeks to make the transition feel more like coming home.
How the Volunteer Programme Works
Under the 'Jiran' framework, new residents are paired with local volunteers who act as community guides. These volunteers greet new arrivals as neighbours and help them navigate the essential aspects of their new environment. The support provided includes guidance on:
- Local schools and educational institutions
- Healthcare facilities and hospitals
- Banking services and financial institutions
- Government services and various local amenities
Beyond practical information, volunteers introduce newcomers to local culture and facilities to facilitate smoother social integration. As a gesture of welcome, new residents are also presented with a gift consisting of locally produced items to help them feel connected to the community from their very first day.
Current Rollout and Expansion Plans
The initiative is currently in its first phase of implementation. The programme is presently active in the following areas:
- Yas Island
- Saadiyat Island
- Al Reem Island
While the programme is currently focused on these locations, the DCD has indicated that there are plans to expand the 'Jiran' initiative to other regions in the future.
