Reports emerging over the last 48 hours have highlighted a crisis regarding Indian migrant workers in the Gulf, with data from the Ministry of External Affairs cited by Panchjanya on 17 September 2026 indicating that more than 800 Indian workers died at overseas workplaces between 2023 and 2025.

Of these fatalities, 55 percent occurred in the Gulf, including 182 deaths in Saudi Arabia and 128 in the UAE. Separately, families in Telangana reported to The Times of India on 16 September 2026 that at least eight men have gone missing after traveling to the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia for work. The missing individuals include Mohammed Sileman, 24, from Cheguntla, Medak, who went to Oman in June on a tourist visa; Alleswarapu Ramesh of Jagtial, who vanished from the UAE on 16 June; Malut Kotaiah of Kamareddy, who disappeared in Saudi Arabia after 30 June; and Bhukya Srikanth of Mallapur, Jagtial, who was last heard from in Baniyas, Dubai, on 7 June. Furthermore, NDTV reported on 17 September 2026 on the cases of Mohammed Afroz of Yakutpura, Hyderabad, reportedly held at the Al-Shumaisi Detention Centre in Jeddah since 2014, and Salman Fariz of Mysuru, allegedly in a Dubai jail following wage disputes with Zaynx Delivery Services. The Majlis Bachao Tehreek has requested government verification of these two cases.
Simultaneously, regional security risks have escalated. On 14 September, the Saudi-led coalition reported that Houthi ballistic missiles and drones struck civilian sites in Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif, wounding 13 civilians and damaging seven houses. Previous attacks in September wounded 73 people across Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran. AajTak noted on 16 September that 27.48 lakh Indians reside in Saudi Arabia, with significant populations in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Taif, Abha, and Khamis Mushait. According to Siasat on 17 September, two-way air traffic between Hyderabad and 12 Gulf destinations declined from 17.65 lakh in the first half of 2025 to 15.22 lakh in the first half of 2026, with traffic to Doha falling by 41 percent.
Despite these reports, media outlets such as The Economic Times on 16 September noted a resurgence in UAE business activities, including concerts and Navratri events, with Platinumlist ticket sales rising 65 percent. Official support mechanisms, including Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendras and the e-Migrate system, remain active, yet families continue to report disappearances and lack of accountability regarding working conditions, which critics cite as inadequate. India currently has nearly one crore nationals in the GCC, with 43 lakh in the UAE and 27 lakh in Saudi Arabia.
