17 Detained in Musandam Illegal Entry Crackdown
Security forces in the Musandam Governorate have apprehended 17 Asian nationals for attempting to enter the Sultanate through unauthorized routes. The Musandam Governorate Police Command confirmed the arrests, which occurred in the wilayats of Dibba and Bukha.
Strategic Security in the Northern Exclave
Due to its unique position bordering the United Arab Emirates and the Strait of Hormuz, Musandam serves as a vital security zone. Authorities have noted frequent attempts to bypass border controls via both land and maritime routes.
This recent operation follows a string of successful interceptions throughout late 2025 and 2026. In previous instances, police and Coast Guard units have intercepted groups of 9, 10, 19, 22, and 39 individuals, many of whom utilized fishing boats to evade detection at official checkpoints.
Severe Consequences for Irregular Entry
The Royal Oman Police have issued a clear warning to the expatriate community: attempting to enter the country illegally carries heavy penalties. Those caught face:
- Detention and ongoing legal proceedings
- Immediate deportation
- Significant financial fines
- Potential lifetime bans from entering any GCC member state
The Dibba border crossing, which opened in 2025, along with other designated official ports, are the only lawful methods for entering the Sultanate.
Guidance for the Expatriate Community
With approximately 550,000 Indian expatriates residing in Oman—the country's largest foreign community—authorities are emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to residency laws. This advice comes amid ongoing shifts in Omanisation policies and work permit regulations.
While these enforcement measures are strictly targeted at illegal entrants, officials remind all foreign workers to keep their residency documentation current. Legal residents and valid visa holders are not impacted by these actions, but compliance remains essential.
