In a recent update, professionals based in the UAE who are aiming to secure a Golden Visa now need to meet a stricter salary requirement. Specifically, applicants must have a basic monthly salary of Dh30,000, excluding any allowances, to qualify for the long-term residency. This change marks a significant shift from the previous criteria, where the total compensation package, including allowances, could be considered.

What Has Changed?

Previously, under the ‘Scientists & Specialists’ pathway, applicants were required to have a gross salary of Dh30,000 per month, which included allowances such as housing and transport. However, the updated rule now focuses solely on the basic salary, setting a higher standard for professionals seeking the 10-year visa.

Impact on Applicants

This new requirement means that even if an individual’s total compensation package reaches the Dh30,000 mark, they may no longer qualify for the Golden Visa if their basic salary falls short. This change has caused some applications to be rejected, as confirmed by residents and immigration experts.

Nofisatu Mojidi, a senior manager at the Dubai office of Fragomen, noted that this shift “raises the bar” for prospective applicants. It indicates the UAE’s intent to attract top-tier talent with substantial earning capacity.

Confirmation and Implications

A customer care agent from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has confirmed this development. According to Firosekhan, operation manager at Arabian Business Centre, only those with a basic salary of Dh30,000 or more are currently securing the long-term visa. He also mentioned that individuals holding positions such as ‘manager’ or ‘director’ and those in professions like engineering and medicine have an easier time meeting the criteria.

Looking Ahead

For professionals considering the Golden Visa, the change underscores the importance of meeting the basic salary threshold. Those currently in the pre-approval stage might face challenges in securing final approval. Additionally, existing Golden Visa holders may need to reassess their eligibility when it comes time for renewal, as the new requirements could affect their continued qualification.
