Residents of Dubai are being reminded of the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws concerning pedestrian crossings, with penalties applicable to both drivers and pedestrians. This reminder comes after a recent court case where both a motorist and a pedestrian were fined following a run-over accident, as reported by local news sources.
Fines Imposed on Both Motorist and Pedestrian 💼
In this particular incident, the driver was fined Dh3,000 for compromising public safety, while the pedestrian faced a Dh200 fine for crossing the road from a non-designated area. The case highlights the strict enforcement of UAE traffic laws, where both parties can be held accountable.
In the UAE, pedestrians are mandated to use designated crossings such as zebra crossings, bridges, or subways. Ignoring these rules can lead to a Dh400 fine. The court, in this case, showed some leniency, but still, both the motorist and the pedestrian were found guilty.
Jaywalking: A Serious Hazard ⚠️
Jaywalking remains a significant concern, with Dubai Police continuously stressing the dangers. Last year alone, eight people lost their lives, and 339 were injured in run-over incidents that occurred due to jaywalking. Furthermore, 44,000 pedestrians were fined in 2023 for crossing roads in non-designated areas.
Legal Obligations for Pedestrians and Drivers ⚖️
Abdulrahman Al Qassem, a legal expert, emphasized that traffic laws are stringent for both drivers and pedestrians. He pointed out, “Even if a pedestrian crosses from a non-designated area, the driver must still exercise caution.”
Earlier this year, a similar case saw a driver and two pedestrians fined after an accident resulted in injuries to the pedestrians. The driver was fined Dh2,000 for not following traffic rules, and the pedestrians were fined Dh400 each for jaywalking.
Strict Rules at Pedestrian Crossings 🚦
Motorists are legally required to give right of way to pedestrians at designated crossings. Failing to do so can lead to a Dh500 fine and six black points on the driver’s record. Dubai Police have made it clear that drivers must wait until the pedestrian has fully crossed the road before continuing to drive.
Advanced Monitoring by Dubai Police 📹
Dubai Police are utilizing smart technology to monitor traffic violations at pedestrian crossings. Offenses are recorded and carefully reviewed before any fines are issued. This ensures that traffic laws are strictly enforced, promoting safety for everyone on the road.
